Hi, I'm ella, and for the fact that you clicked on this post, I can tell that you have been considering content creation for a while now and quite frankly, so have I. I will be sharing with you how you can start content creation and the important things to know beforehand.

In this post:
  • What Is Content Creation.

  • Positive Impacts of Content Creation.
  • Important Things to Consider.

What Is Content Creation.

Content creation is the process of generating and sharing information, ideas, or experiences in various forms, such as text, images, videos, or audio, to engage and inform an audience. This can include writing blog posts, filming videos, designing graphics, recording podcasts, and more, with the goal of reaching and connecting with people across different platforms like websites, social media, and YouTube.

My Content Creation Setbacks.

 Starting content creation was definitely not an easy decision for me for the following reasons;
  • Self-consciousness: this basically means i worried a lot about the fact that someone watching might know me personally. Weirdly, I was more worried about that than being watched by other people that didn't know me. Personally, I'd say that was my biggest hinderance.
  • Lack of consistency: I was also worried that i would not be able be consistent with it and realistically, the best advice I can give to anyone struggling with this is to be intentional. This basically means INTENTIONALLY set apart time every day or two times a week at least to film and any other time to edit. As mentioned in the definition of content creation, it is brought to our awareness that it isn't just limited to vlogging but also blogging and audio means, so set apart as much time as necessary.
  • Content Quality: It would be very time consuming to brainstorm and actually efficiently execute content that is actually relevant. This would not be too difficult if again, you are intentional about it.
  • Camera Quality: I personally hate watching videos without a good camera quality so I definitely could not see myself filming a video with a phone or camera without a good quality and this obviously doesn't come cheap. Although this might be the setback of some, I recommend starting with what is already available instead of waiting for something you have no idea where it's coming from.  That first step is all that is necessary.

Positive Impacts of Content Creation.

But forgetting all your worries and just putting yourself out there can be positively impactful because:
  1. It allows expression of creativity
  2. It helps one develop technical skills such as video editing, graphics design and even coding.
  3. It brings about monetization opportunities over time.
  4. It can lead to building a community of like-minded people offering support, feedback or opportunities for collaboration.
  5. It brings about person growth i.e. learning discipline, time management and handling constructive criticism.

Important Things to Consider.

I think the mistake a lot of aspiring content creators make is the complete focus they have on these positive impacts forgetting the amount of work that is actually supposed to go into it. Here are some of the things an aspiring content creator should consider:
  1. It is time consuming: to create high quality content regularly takes up a lot of time and this can be sort of overwhelming especially for beginners.
  2. Algorithm changes: the algorithm of platforms is frequently changed. This can affect engagement and visibility of content.
  3. Negative feedback: Beginners must be ready to handle negative feedback/criticism. This may be disheartening but just know that it is a part of the growth process.

My Top Tips.

Here are my top tips for a beginner creator:
  1. Define your niche: Focus on a particular topic or area of interest that you enjoy and/or are passionate about. This will help you build a dedicated audience.
  2. Plan your content: Developing a content calendar will keep you organized by letting you know what you want to post and when. This helps you stay consistent, and consistency is key to building an audience.
  3. Start with what you have: I have talked about this in the beginning parts. Waiting for the "perfect gear" won't get you any closer to achieving your dream but rather, starting with what is currently available and continuing with better gear when it finally comes along is a much better approach.
  4. Focus on quality over quantity: Feeding your audience fewer quality content is better than flooding them with low-quality ones. Quality builds trust and this keeps them coming back.
  5. Engage with your audience: Building a relationship with your audience fosters loyalty and community. This can be done by replying, comments, asking for feedback and encouraging interaction.
  6. Learn SEO basics
  7. Continuously learn and adapt
  8. Be patient and persistent
  9. Share your content
  10. Take care of yourself
