Starting with Ella, Let's talk extracurriculars
Hi, I'm Ella, and I'm currently a high school junior. I created this blog as a space to share my thoughts as well as my college application journey as an international student with you guys. That most likely wouldn't be the only thing I talk about here, but I really can't specifically predict what you should be expecting but I really do hope you find whatever I have to give entertaining as well as educating. ✨
In this post:
- My Current Experience.
- 12 Extracurricular Activities You Can Choose from and Add to Your List.
- My final thoughts.

So, right now I'm struggling to build my list of extracurricular activities because of indecision and if you're probably in a similar situation, I advise that you just try new things and step out of your comfort zone. If I hadn't done that, this blog wouldn't exist, would it?
I'm creating a list of new things/extracurriculars to tryout but as earlier mentioned, indecision will probably be the main factor to slow this process down.
When I have a list or a draft, I'll be sure to share just in case you too can benefit from it.
12 Extracurricular Activities You Can Choose from and Add to Your List.
A WEEK LATER😭...
So, it's been about a week, and this is my recently concluded -and very likely to be modified- list of extracurricular activities. (Note that I do not play any sports so if you do, make sure to add it into your list)
1. Blogging: Starting a blog shows initiative, communication skills and commitment. It is also a great medium of documenting your journey as well as achievements.
2. Clubs: Belonging to clubs related to your desired course of study or even one that can be unrelated but shows passion for something you love doing, for example a hobby such as writing or speaking, shows interest in learning and self-development.
3. Volunteering: This is basically giving back to the society. Honestly, I need to do more research on opportunities for volunteering, but I already have one that I plan to do later in mind. Volunteering isn't restricted to cleaning the streets or helping out in an elderly home. Have you ever heard of a volunteer tutor, a person that willingly tutors students for no cost. If left to me, I'd say volunteering is more about giving back in the small way you can than helping out randomly just for the sake of gathering up hours.
4. Prefect ship roles: A prefect is a student leader appointed in many schools to help maintain discipline, represent the student body and assist teacher and administrators. This shows leadership and gives the impression that a person has a great sense of responsibility.
5. Religious extracurriculars: This includes belonging to a team of people at your local religious center, for example, being part of the choir, being part of the media team or even an evangelist.
6. Social media: Posting good content on social media counts as a great extracurricular, especially when it gets notable numbers i.e. views and followings/subscriptions.
7. Learn a new language: learning a new language, especially outside of school, is a great extracurricular although some might not directly agree with this opinion. This will look better on your application if you take a proficiency test for that language,
8. Tutoring: I'm not planning on tutoring for money. It's actually going to be a voluntary one on the schoolhouse website, feel free to check it out. Of course, tutoring for money also counts as an extracurricular and earns you some money 😁.
9. A musical instrument: This shows discipline and commitment. For myself, I'm not so sure about this but it would be a great extracurricular if you are able to.
10. Learning to code: like learning a new language, some might see this as a mere hobby, but this has other advantages, for instance if I know how to code, I could create and publish my own app, participate in hackathons and so on. These do count as extracurriculars especially if you plan on going into tech.
11. Internships: these are great extracurricular activities especially when they fall in line with your intended course of study.
12. Owning a YouTube channel: Okay I know I already previously mentioned social media, but I just wanted to place an emphasis on creating a YouTube channel. This can count not only as an extracurricular, but also as a passion project. This depends on the content though. If your content is dedicated to a particular topic e.g. health, anti-pollution etc., it then can be considered a passion project. It also doesn't hurt to make a few bucks 😏.
My Final Thoughts
I really hope to be consistent with this and hopefully start a vlog one-day (when I have the required tools). I hope this helped you in deciding which extracurriculars to pick and make sure to do additional research seeing that these are just a few I feel could work for me. Thank you for reading!
